After playing in senior premierships with Rennie in 1952 and 1954, Rennie was pursued by several league clubs. After playing with Corowa in 1955, the defender was initially reluctant to join Melbourne, but gave up working on his father's property at Corowa to travel to the city where he was described as the Demons' 'star recruit' of 1956.

Sandral was a late call-up to that year's Grand Final team after Geoff McGivern was injured in the Semi Final win. He came off the bench in the second half to play in a premiership in his 15th game.

After the 1957 season he returned to Corowa and won the Best and Fairest award for the Ovens and Murray League twice (including 1959) and finished second in 1964. He then captain/coached Rennie from 1965 to 1970, leading the side to a premiership in his last game.
