After playing in senior premierships with Rennie in 1952 and 1954, and winning the Coreen League's Best and Fairest in 1953, Rennie was pursued by several league clubs while playing with Corowa in 1955. The defender was initially reluctant about joining a VFL club, but gave up working on his father's farm to sign with Melbourne in 1956. He was described as their 'star recruit', and debuted early in the season. After 15 games

After playing with Corowa in 1955, the defender was initially reluctant to join Melbourne, but gave up working on his father's property at Corowa to travel to the city where he was described as the Demons' 'star recruit' of 1956. He played in the Semi Final, but was set to miss the Grand Final until an injury to Geoff McGivern saw Sandral back on the bench. He played in the second half, appearing in a premiership after just 15 games.
After seven games in 1957, Sandral he returned to Corowa and won the Best and Fairest award for the Ovens and Murray League twice (including 1959) and finished second in 1964. He then captain/coached Rennie from 1965 to 196, leading them to a premiership in his last game.
