Originally undecided about playing league football despite being pursued by Melbourne in 1955, Sandral gave up working on his father's property at Corowa to travel to the city where he was described as the Demons' 'star recruit' of 1956.

He was a late call-up to that year's Grand Final team after Geoff McGivern was injured in the Semi Final win.

After the 1957 season finished he returned to Corowa and won the Best and Fairest award for the Ovens and Murray League twice (including 1959) and finished second in 1964.
