Signed by the Demons in June 1935, McNaughton played Seconds football for three seasons before finally being picked to make his senior debut in 1938 when used as a late replacement for an injured player.
In the year he played his two senior matches, McNaughton finished equal third in the 1938 Seconds Gardiner Medal. He also played in a combined Melbourne/St Kilda side against East Fremantle and suffered a compound dislocation of the finger.
He was cleared to VFA side Prahran in April 1939.
