Signed by the Demons in June 1935, McNaughton played Seconds football until being cleared to Melbourne High School Old Boys in June 1937. He returned in the 1938 pre-season and played two games that year, after debuting as a late replacement for an injured player.

In the year he played his two senior matches, McNaughton finished equal third in the 1938 Seconds Gardiner Medal. He also played in a combined Melbourne/St Kilda side against East Fremantle and suffered a compound dislocation of the finger.

He was cleared to VFA side Prahran in April 1939.
