For the fourth week in a row Melbourne's win was based on a fast starting first quarter. On the other hand St Kilda had lost four in a row and were not expected to be any match for the high flying Demons.

The first quarter was the difference in the end but it didn't tell the whole story of the match. Melbourne's quarter time lead evaporated in the second at St Kilda slammed on six goals in a row to take an 18 point lead, only for Melbourne to add six of their own in the minutes before half time to restore the original margin.

From there Melbourne were unimpressive, and St Kilda won the second half by a point thanks to holding Melbourne goalless in the last quarter.

Best were Beames, Roberts and Smith.
