Reserves follower from 1961, who retired at the end of the season. He returned during 1962 and was made vice-captain.

In June 1963, Ireland transferred to Port Melbourne to play under captain/coach and former Demon Laurie Mithen as due to university study and work he was rarely able to attend training on a regular basis and the VFA schedule suited him better.

In 1964 he transferred to West Perth, before returning to Port Melbourne in 1967 where he remained to 1969.

Ireland coached Box Hill to their first VFA Grand Final in 1970, the Croydon to the Eastern Football League flag in 1971 and Kilsyth to the EFL premiership in 1975. Played a further season for Box Hill in 1973.
