A midfielder, Bourke played nine games each in his two seasons at the Demons before joining the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season. He failed to win a spot on the list but decided to stay in Queensland and joined Morningside.

Despite undergoing a knee reconstruction in 1988 He played 187 games, won the Grogan Medal for best player in Queensland in 1989 and 1993, played in three premiership sides and represented the state ten times.

Bourke is a member of the Queensland football Hall of Fame.
