Biggest loss in Round 22
The last act in the 22nd straight year without a finals appearance was played out with a limp performance at Princes Park. They had smashed North Melbourne with a record score Round 21 but there was precious little sign of a repeat against a side destined to go on and win the flag.
Kicking with a strong breeze in the first term the Demons kicked 2.8 to 4.4 and were then held to a point going against it in the second term. The Blues piled on 8.1 to 2.3 in the final term to canter away to a big win.
Without Brian Wilson, Garry Lyon and Robert Flower the Demons blooded Greg Sizer who wasn't disgraced playing against David Rhys-Jones but would never manage another senior match.
Shane Zantuck was chaired off the ground after announcing he would retire after the game.
Best for the Demons were Healy, Connolly and Turner.
