Debuted in the Under 19's during 1988, then floated around the Demons' lower grades for the next two seasons before making his first senior appearance. After his Under 19 debut he'd returned to Epping, before rejoining the club in 1989 and winning the Under 19 Best and Fairest. He starred in the 1990 reserves finals series with nine goals against Footscray in the second-semi final and earned himself another year on the senior list.
Given his chance in the senior side after Melbourne's disastrous two goal Round 1, 1991 performance against the Eagles, Cuthbertson contributed two goals in each of his first two games before going goalless in the round 4 win over Carlton. Lucky to hold his place, it led to an amazing three weeks. In Round 5, the 21-year-old booted seven goals against North Melbourne in what remains Melbourne's equal highest score in a game. To prove it wasn't a fluke he kicked another seven the next Saturday at Waverley Park. Suddenly the talk of the footballing world, Cuthbertson had another five at the MCG the next week against Brisbane, and 23 goals in his first six games.
He kicked five goals in 11 games in 1992 and nine in five in 1993 before leaving the club. His best goalkicking feat in a Demon jumper had been booting 13 in a reserves final against Richmond, but despite his goalkicking feats in that game he was still delisted at the end of the year.
After training at Hawthorn in the 1994 pre-season but not being picked up, Cuthbertson returned to Epping and played there until the mid 2000's when he moved to Montmorency.
