After a standout junior basketball career, including being named in the Australian under-18 squad, Petracca was voted the best player in the 2014 Under 18 All-Australian tournament. He was an All-Australian player and named in the TAC Cup team of the year before being selected by Melbourne with the second pick of the 2014 Draft.
Petracca suffered a season ending knee injury in the 2015 pre-season, and after sitting out the whole year he made his debut early the next year and quickly became a regular playing across half-forward and through the midfield. He won a Rising Star nomination in Round 9 that year.
One of the few players to appear in every game in 2017 he impressed as a forward, with spells in the midfield and kicked 26 goals. He was mostly played as a forward again in 2018, having a career best number of scoring shots but restricted to 19.23 by inaccuracy. Petracca split time between forward and midfield in 2019, playing every game for the season and leading the club goalkicking, albeit with the low average of one goal per game.
2020 was Petracca's breakout season. He announced himself with a dominant performance in a pre-season match, and continued his form into the pandemic hit home and away season. Though his goal average dropped, he spent more time in the midfield, finishing third in the Brownlow Medal and winning his first Best and Fairest.
He was amongst his side's best in 2021, playing every game, and again winning All Australian honours. Petracca won the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground in the Grand Final, with a record equalling 39 possessions. He was again ever-present in the side in 2022, and was named All Australian for a third time. In Round 2 he registered a career high 40 disposals but it was his worst season in front of goal, kicking 19.31 with a number of other shots that failed to score.
Petracca earned a fourth All Australian call-up in 2023 after playing every game for the year. He was again inaccurate in front of goal with 28.34, but played an important role both midfield and forward in another top four finish. That year he won a second Best and Fairest.
In 2024, Petracca split time between midfield and forward as he was regularly tagged. He kicked a career high five goals in the Round 9 loss to Carlton. In Round 13 an injury in a marking contest left Petracca with broken ribs, a lacerated spleen, and punctured lung. It ended his season, and a streak of 145 consecutive games dating back to Round 7, 2018, the third longest in club history.
