August 1885 match vs Richmond

Saturday August 8 - Richmond Cricket Ground
Crowd - 1000

Richmond 5.12
Melbourne 2.10 (half time 2.6 to 1.6)

Richmond win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: Griffiths 1, Doran 1

Melbourne's second game against one of the new VFA sides ended with the same result as their first, a disappointing defeat.

The newcomers had lost seven in a row before the match, so even with the visitors in barely better form they were confident of winning.

The visitors won the toss and made their opponents kick up-hill towards the railway end, taking a lead into half time courtesy of kicking two goals to one. Richmond got the first behind, but Melbourne responded with the opening goal through Griffiths. Richmond narrowly averted conceding a second goal to the same player a few minutes later, restricting Melbourne to behinds before equalising from a free kick.

Melbourne got the second goal of the half through Doran, and should have had another if not for missing an easy shot, but it was their last for the match and when they kicked downhill in the second half Richmond dominated.

They got the first goal to level the scores, and after a brief period where the match was in the balance, Richmond had Melbourne's measure. Melbourne put in a few attacks throughout the half but were unable to break through for another goal.

Best were Aitken, Carroll and Franks.

To try and stop patrons intruding on the field seats were position around the western side of the ground. "Noisy juveniles" were also encouraged not to stand in front of the pavilion.

Notes
Some sources say half-time score was 1.5-2.5
