Cleared to Melbourne in May 1933 but remained with the Seconds until making his senior debut a year and a half later, in the second last game of 1934.

During 1935 he was hospitalised with an infected leg and only played two games.

Sweeney was cut from the senior list shortly before the start of the 1936 season.
