Champion amateur player who was heavily sought by the Demons in 1965. He had been invited to train with the club in 1964 but declined. In 1965 he played pre-season games and was a certainty to make the senior list but when offered the chance to make his senior debut he chose to stay with Uni Blacks. In the 1966 pre-season he unexpectedly returned from several months overseas to train, ultimately signing for the Demons after impressing during practice games.
Burston kicked six goals against Hawthorn in his sixth game but played just two more matches. His inability to make training because of commitments in the country as a research officer with ICI concerned the club and he only played one season of senior football.
Despite offers from a number of clubs to train with them in the 1967 pre-season, Burston stayed out of league football.
