First involved with the MFC in 1938 as the result of a close friendship with Coterie Chairman John Saunders, King became the first secretary of the group in 1949 and served in the role for 30 years.

He was elected to the club committee for 1950, and served as club treasurer as well as an official for the Victorian Country Football League. In 1962 he was appointed one of Melbourne's two league delegates upon the death of Richard Taylor, and as a member of the VFL Permit Committee, helped to establish the country zone system.

He was made a VFL Life Member in 1971 and served on the league's committee until 1975. He remained on the Melbourne committee until his passing in 1979.
