The Eagles' 1998 Best First Year Player, was better known in the Eastern states for his role in the Round 21, 2000 "Demolition Derby" brawl with Fremantle. Suspended for two weeks as a result of his stoush with Dale Kickett, Read didn't play again until 2003 because of two pre-season knee injuries. He returned to the Eagles lineup in 2003 for eleven games - including the last eight of the year - but was delisted at the end of the season.
After playing 21 games in his first season with the Demons, highlighted by two goals in the losing Elimination Final, Read found it hard to break into the side. He played just eight games in 2005 due to hamstring injuries and five in 2006 before being delisted.
His last act as a listed Melbourne player was to help deliver a third consecutive VFL premiership to Sandringham with a best-on-ground performance against Geelong at Princes Park. He was also Sandringham's Best and Fairest that year.
In 2007 he signed with the Geelong VFL side but was soon on the move back to Perth where he played in the Subiaco's 2008 WAFL Premiership. Read finished equal 7th in the 2009 Sandover Medal with 23 votes despite missing the last two months of the season with a broken foot suffered in a surfing accident. His final season of senior football was 2010.
