Promoted to the senior list from the Thirds shortly before Round 1, 1955, Atkinson played his first three VFL games as a follower that year. After suffering two broken ribs in his second match, and playing on until the end of the game, he didn't return for another seven weeks, after which he played once more.

He remained on the list in 1956 and won a Seconds flag but didn't play a senior match, despite being named in the squad for the Olympic exhibition match against the VFA. He added just four more senior games in 1957.

He spent most of 1958 captain-coaching WAFL side Claremont before returning to Victoria and training with North Melbourne in the 1959 pre-season. Before the season started Atkinson accepted a job as captain coach of Brighton in the VFA. He applied for the job again in 1960 and was unsuccessful.
