A quick half-forward, McSpeerin fell victim to numerous hamstring injuries and only managed 16 games across three seasons. After leaving Melbourne he played for Prahran in 1974 and 1975, and appeared with Hampton Rovers in the 1977 amateurs competition.
Moving to Sydney he became the Swans' Under 19s runner and after the competition was ended he became a became a boundary umpire, a role which he served in through 2008 - became a life member of the Sydney AFL Umpires Association.
