Two of the highest scoring teams the competition came together and put on one of the best games of the year. A blistering first quarter set up the victory for the Demons, responding to North's first goal by slamming on nine of the next 10. Norm Smith and Roy Dowsing went to quarter time with four goals each.
The margin slightly extended before half time, with McGrath twice brilliantly keeping North's forwards out. Only a goal on the bell allowed the home side any advantage in the quarter. North finally began to chip away at the lead during the third quarter, reducing the margin to 33 before a seven goal to four last term made the result more respectable.
Despite the final score flattering North they had been second best all day, and they were flattered by having booted four goals in the last five minutes of the game.
McGrath, Smith and La Fontaine were best. 19th man Lenne was not used.
