First on Melbourne's list wearing number 25 in 1939, Neenan debuted late the next season after playing in a Seconds premiership.

He was a fringe player throughout two premiership seasons and moved to South Melbourne halfway through 1942 where he added another three games to his career tally late in the season - including a semi final. Despite playing in three wins during his South career he didn't appear in their losing Preliminary Final side and that was the end of his VFL career.
