With their eye on the big clash against Collingwood a week later, Melbourne suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of a Carlton side playing to stay in the hunt for the finals.
The game was close for the first half, but Melbourne's uncharacteristic fumbling bought back memories of their disappointing Round 1 loss to Richmond as they looked anything like the hot team they'd been for the last two months.
Their mistakes allowed Carlton to take control of the game, and it was only poor kicking for goal which kept the margin to five goals.
The loss dropped Melbourne from first to fourth. Despite the defeat Melbourne set a league record for having scored more than a hundred points in a match for the eigth consecutive week.
La Fontaine, Mueller and Hingston were best.
