The Reds ended the first half of the season with just one win, and despite holding Essendon scoreless in the first quarter they squandered their chances by kicking 1.5 and added just 2.7 for the rest of the match - 1.6 in the second half against 8.10.
As Melbourne faced up to the prospect of a second half of the year with only the winless University beneath them 'Football Record' described them as lacking "nip and dash and enthusiasm".
