Jim Stynes played through a dislocated finger with eight stitches to play his 204th consecutive game, equalling the record of Jack Titus. Garry Lyon also played, recalled after not playing since Round 2 due to a back injury despite training for the first time in 40 days.
Hawthorn kicked their first goal after 30 seconds, led by 24 points at quarter time, and were never threatened.
After two goals in the previous two weeks, Jason Dunstall booted eight for the Hawks. Defeat dropped Melbourne below the soon-to-be-extinct Fitzroy to last on the ladder. Neil Balme said "Every week we are convinced we are going to be good enough but I've not seen anything to say we are."
Best were Clarkson, Turley and Stynes. Ingerson suffered a broken rib.
