The former Victorian Metropolitian representative drafted as a quick half-forward, but injured his knee in a 1995 Reserves pre-season game and couldn't break into the seniors after returning.

Played three games in 1996 before injuring his wrist, as well as two in 1997 after a delayed start to the season due to a hand injury. He failed to find a permanent role in the side and was delisted at the end of that year. McHardy nominated for the draft but was not selected and joined VFL side Williamstown in 1998.
