Having sunk to the bottom of the ladder after their fifth loss in the first six games, the Demons finally broke through for another win. It helped them pull away from last place - and exclusion from the second round of the season, even if they were highly unlikely to feature in the finals.
In a match where one end dominated the scoring it was Carlton's inaccuracy in the first and third terms which cost them dearly. Melbourne weren't much better, kicking 13.14 to 8.15 but took more goalscoring chances and were rewarded with victory. The Demons attacked from the opening bounce and goalled first, before Carlton settled into the game and opened an 18 point quarter time lead.
Fred Fanning helped wrest the lead back, with three early goals in the second quarter after strong work in the middle of the ground. The Blues made positional changes to try and stop Fanning, but by half time he had six goals and his side were 20 in front. More changes at the half helped cut the gap to four by three quarter time.
Neither side scored for the first 10 minutes of the final term, before Carlton goalled from a free kick to take the lead back for the first time since the first quarter. Dalton responded by rolling a goal through from a scrimmage, before Fanning's eighth gave his side a handy break. Carlton cut the gap to five but Melbourne held on.
Dullard was Melbourne's best, along with Ted and Don Cordner. Walsh was the unused 19th man.
The victory gave the Demons a game's break on last place South Melbourne, with the bye still to come.
