Collingwood win by 22 points
Melbourne had won two games in a row to sneak into equal fourth place, and won some credit in their loss against the unbeaten Magpies. The visitors beat their opponents with pace, and played a more vigorous game early on. The Pies had been known for rushing to large leads early in games, but found surprising resistance from the Demons.
They defused a number of Magpie attacks and kept the ball on the wing where Collingwood were unable to take full advantage of the breeze, and Melbourne were two points in front at quarter time. They kicked the first two goals of the second quarter to extend their lead, and were out to 12 points in front at half time.
A winning ruck division and strong wing play saw Melbourne peppering Collingwood's goal early in the third but they were unable to break through for full reward until Smith kicked the first of the term to extend the lead to three goals. Halfway through the quarter they had kicked 1.4 while Collingwood had gone forward twice for two goals.
Melbourne had out-played Collingwood until three quarter time, and took a 16 point lead into the last quarter. The home side made a number of positional changes, but they didn't seem to make a great difference for the first 10 minutes and Melbourne might have sealed the game had they not missed two easy chances on goal. It was then that the home side become reinvigorated, kicking four goals in five minutes as Melbourne could do nothing to stop them.
The defeat left the Demons a game outside the top four.
Best were Wartman, Fischer and Mueller. Barassi was 19th man. N. Smith replaced Taylor (groin) in the selected side.
