Fresh off winning their first trophy in 16 years in the night series during the week, Melbourne introduced four players who hadn't been in the midweek game amongst seven changes and avoided a post-premiership let down by being in front at every change to win comfortably.
In a poor game it was Melbourne's Irish recruit Sean Wight who provided the crowd with the highlight of the day. With the ABC TV cameras choosing not to cover the match the world was denied coverage of a magnificent goal by Wight. A long kick went over his head towards the boundary line, and while no time to pick it up Wight slid on his left leg and soccer kicked with the ball through on his right.
Leg weary from three games in seven days the Demons took the foot off the accelerator in the last term but the Tigers weren't good enough to capitalise.
Best were Danny Hughes, Brian Wilson and Adrian Battiston.
