Coming off a disappointing loss against the Magpies where they only kicked two goals for the afternoon in horror conditions the Demons were forced to battle through the first three quarters before running away from the Hawks.

Conditions were once again abysmal, marking the third straight week in which games had been played in wet, muddy weather - and Melbourne learnt their lesson from the loss at Victoria Park to make sure they maintained the physical pressure throughout the day. Instead of trying to soccer the ball along the ground again they kicked it long to the benefit of their forwards.

Hawthorn were strong for the first three quarters, and when they held Melbourne goalless in the third quarter it looked as if they might be set for a close finish. But when Melbourne came out in the last quarter with their backs to the wall they put in their best football of the day and ran away with a relatively comfortable victory.

John Beckwith, Tassie Johnson and Terry Gleeson were Melbourne's best. Ridley (cramp) was replaced by Kenneally and Mann by Thorogood.

Despite the victory it was Melbourne's second lowest score against the Hawks in 20 years.
