Signed by the Demons in 1957, half-forward Milner made an immediate impact by winning the Best First Year Player award for the Seconds.

He made the senior list in 1959 and finally made his debut the next year. He played five of the first six games before breaking his collarbone in a Round 6 win over Richmond. He didn't play again that year, but was considered a chance to make a shock comeback for the Grand Final if an injured heel kept Bryan Kenneally out. Kenneally was passed fit to play, and Milner returned for 10 games in 1961.

Milner was cleared to Port Melbourne in 1963 where he played 14 games, remaining there through 1966.
