The Demons had appeared to be back on track after a Round 1 loss when they beat Collingwood and Essendon in consecutive weeks, but a surprise defeat against Hawthorn left them 2-2 and vulnerable. A defeat against the Saints might have derailed the young Demons' side's attempt at a hat-trick of premierships.
They didn't have it all their own way, and St Kilda challenged them until the third quarter before running out gad. The Saints opened a two goals lead during the term before Melbourne took over. Their attack started to fire, with two goals from Geoff Tunbridge, and seemed to fix most of the deficiencies which had cost them the week before.
Eventually Melbourne did enough to keep the visitors at bay, win by just under five goals to improve to 3-2 and stay in the early hunt for the top four but it still left questions about whether or not the 1957 Demons could contend for the premiership.
Best were Adams, Ridley and Tunbridge. Trevor Johnson was replaced with Wilson (knee) and Adams by Pinford (cramps).
