On return from their match in Sydney a week before Melbourne were sluggish in the first quarter and conceded a 28 point lead that would ultimately cost them the game. They marginally outscored South across the next three quarters but were unable to recover the deficit.
When the game settled down after quarter time South had the dominant ruck and better system, but Melbourne's superior pace kept the game close.
Best were Conquest, Strong and Langley.
