South hadn't beaten the Demons on the MCG since 1952 and their run out of outs continued with a thumping loss. Melbourne's first two appearances of the new season had been unconvincing wins, and it took the hapless Swans to play them into some form.
After a disappointing first quarter when neither side kicked a goal and South put on just five behinds with the wind the Demons took control in the second quarter and opened up a five goal lead. South never threatened again, showing themselves incapable of playing in the wet, heavy conditions.
Despite the absence of Bob Johnson, Melbourne were rewarded for being harder at the ball. and they had 10 different goalkickers. With their forward line functioning better than it had all season a disorganised South had no answers. It was their biggest loss to the Demons for 20 years.
Best were Beckwith, Barassi and Rowarth. Case was replaced by Turner and Ridley by Milner.
