The Demons continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable win over North, set up by a big first half which had them seven goals to the good at the long break. It was their ninth straight win against North.

North made several positional changes at half time in an attempt to slow Melbourne down, but the only one that worked was a moved which shut centreman Laurie Mithen down. The Demons still had far too much attacking power for the home side - and North had no answer for Bob Johnson who was dominant in the ruck and booted five goals while resting forward.

The finals scores were controversial, as both major newspapers reported the result as 12.19 to 7.8 but goal umpires took a point off both sides - Melbourne at three quarter time and North at full time. The 'official' scores did not tally with behinds credited to individual players, but it didn't affect the result and only had a slight effect on percentages.

Best were Dixon, Tunbridge and Barassi. Laidlaw (bruised ribs) was replaced by Crameri in the third quarter and Barassi (cramp) by Rowarth in the last quarter.
