Geelong hadn't won a game in Melbourne all 1946 season, and the Demons did their best to get the visitors off to a start by opening the match with 13 straight behinds. Melbourne kicked 0.7 in the first quarter, compared to 4.7 by the visitors. The conditions were difficult but the visitors handled them much better.
Melbourne gradually warmed to the game in the second quarter, but at first they continued to be wildly inaccurate and missed a number of easy chances. They finally got a goal via a snap from Mitchell, and four goals in the last five minutes of the second quarter put them back within striking distance.
Geelong kicked the first two goals of the third quarter, but they continued to kick inaccurately and it was only their scoring shot advantage which put them in front at the last change. They kicked two goals at the start of the last quarter and withstood a brief Geelong rally to run out easy winners.
Dockett, Rodda and O'Connor were best. 19th and 20th men were Bowman and Scanlan. Scanlan replaced Arnold (leg injury) in the last quarter.
