After two straight thrilling wins to open the season the Reds finally came a cropper in their third close game. The two sides strengths were the complete opposite, Melbourne better in the air and close in when scrapping for the ball but the home side superior with their speed when the ball broke into the open.

St Kilda had the only goal of the first quarter, until a quick-fire double at the end of the term gave the Reds a seven point lead at the first change of ends. The home side had the use of the wind in the second quarter, and after Melbourne had attacked first the Seasiders replied with their second goal. Again the visitors got a late goal, this time through Matthews and went into half time seven points up.

Melbourne had the first goal of the third quarter as well, but just as St Kilda looked in trouble they rallied and roared back to level the scores at the last change. Melbourne booted the first two goals of the last quarter and looked like winning before the Seasiders came back from the dead again. They hit the lead late from a free kick, and after attacking for three more behinds added another goal on the bell.

Best were Chadwick, Harker and Haines. House suffered a broken finger.
