The two teams fought out a poor game, ruined by being played on a mudheap. It was was even until half-time but Melbourne ran away with the game in the end. Towards the conclusion of the match everyone on the field started following the ball and it became extremely rough.
On the final bell Carlton supporters 'made a great demonstration' against the visiting reds, with Fred McGinis the focus of their disapproval.
Best were Cumberland, McGinis and Moodie. Leith was injured.
