Rising Star nominee - Jeff Farmer
With their finals hopes long over, and a decision on merging with Hawthorn drawing nearer, Melbourne went on what might have been the last interstate trip in their history and were thrashed. Even with three changes from their selected side the Eagles jumped to a six goal lead at quarter time. The visitors temporarily reduced the gap in the third term, but by the last change the margin was 55 points. It only got worse in the last quarter, with West Coast running out 73 point winners.
Best were Viney, Farmer and G. Lovett.
