Needing a win to keep themselves in the finals mix, the Demons burst out of the blocks and were greeted with a standing ovation by the members when they went into the quarter time break with a 46 point lead.
The Cats were already in the five and Melbourne's demolition job on them in the opening term showed that if the Demons snuck into the five by beating the wooden spooners elect Collingwood the next week they could do some serious damage.
In a high scoring shootout the damage was done and Geelong shaved just one point off the margin by that end of the match.
Best were Flower, Fowler and Davis. Keays replaced Alves (bruised hip) in the third quarter and Grambeau replaced O'Keefe (bruised shoulder) in the last quarter.
