In one of the two games on the first Anzac Day where football had been permitted - with gate proceeds were donated to the Anzac Day proceeds fund, the Demons kept their flawless record alive with a fighting win over the Saints who handed Melbourne to victory by falling apart in the last quarter.

St Kilda had been the better side for much of the day and took an eight point lead into the final term but kicked just 0.2 to 5.4, giving them a total of 1.11 for the entire second half. Nine of the behinds had come in quick succession during the third quarter as they blew a golden opportunity to put the Demons away.

Once Melbourne took the lead in the last quarter they won easily, with many of St Kilda's players looking exhausted. They kept the Saints' goal under siege and made the most of their opportunities to score 5.4 while restricting their opponents to two behinds.

Best were Tunbridge, Beckwith and Milner. McLean was replaced by Milner in the selected team due to an injured shoulder. Milner (cramp) was replaced by Kenneally in the last quarter. Debutant Len Mann replaced Geoff Tunbridge in the last quarter.
