Led by their dominant small brigade the Demons notched up a win despite fielding a side seemingly too tall for the tight confines of Punt Road Oval. In a poor game both sides adopted direct tactics to get the ball towards their forwards as soon as possible, Melbourne's advantage came with strength in the packs. Their disposals were occasionally ineffective, but they rose above that to win.
Rollason kicked five, but he spurned numerous opportunities presented to him by Rodda, Rule and Jackson streaming out of the centre. His side took a four point lead into the long break, but Rollason and the rest of the Demon attack were nullified in the third by a strong Tigers defence and the last quarter began with the scores level.
The last quarter see-sawed between the sides, with Melbourne taking the lead first only for Richmond to hit back and pull in front. In the dying minutes Denis Cordner went forward and goalled twice to extend the margin to seven before the Tigers replied to cut the margin back to a solitary point. Richmond were doing all the attacking, but a Don Cordner mark in the dying seconds ensured that his side held onto victory.
Best were Rodda, Rule and Deans. Bedford replaced Spencer (shoulder) at half time and Carlon replaced Rodda (torn thigh muscle) in the last quarter. McGivern injured his nose.
