After a disappointing first up loss, the Reds faced the league's amateur easybeats. After an early fright Varsity was eventually beaten comfortably.
University charged to an early lead, and with only a goal taken off the margin at half time it looked as if the side who only won a single game the year before was going to cause a massive upset at the MCG.
Melbourne regrouped in the third quarter and then ran over the top of the Students in the final term.
McKenzie collapsed at three-quarter time after some vigorous play, while Monk was temporarily knocked out by a blow to his nose. In the dressing room after the game he couldn't remember leaving the field, playing the rest of the game or the result.
Future Reds Jack Brake and Roy Park were the best for University.
Fitzpatrick played with discomfort all day as the result of having run a nail into his foot the previous day.
Mick Maguire was reported by a steward for striking and suspended for four matches. He had taken one player to ground and struck him, then when another University player said "why don't you hit one your own size?" he was struck as well. He denied the first strike and claimed self-defence in the second, but his case was unsuccessful. At the tribunal hearing he was warned to "keep your boxing proclivities off the football field."
