The Hawks won comfortably, but they were still disappointing against the rock bottom last Demons. Melbourne's dysfunctional forward line had managed to craft 14.13, including three posters, enough to give Hawthorn supporters a chill just three weeks out from the finals.
Tony Sullivan had a great game in the centre after replacing Denis Clark, who was forced from the field with a hamstring injury in the second quarter. He was one of the main reasons that the Demons stayed in touch for most of the day with a lethargic Hawks side. Greg Wells, Chamberlain and Baker were best on ground. Owen replaced Clark and Slade (bruised knee) was replaced by Wood in the second quarter. Chamberlain replaced Delmenico in the selected side.
