After getting the season on track with a win over top of the table Essendon a week earlier the Demons faced strugglers Fitzroy hoping for a percentage boosting win to consolidate their position in the five. They got the victory was it was hardly inspirational.
The Roys outscored a wasteful Melbourne for all but six minutes of the first half, surrendering the lead to four goals in time-on during the second quarter. At one point the Dees had 6.13 on the board before their late run of goals.
The party continued in the third quarter with the margin extending to eight goals midway through the term and then 43 points halfway through the last quarter but Fitzroy fought back on both occasions.
Best were Viney, Lovett and Lyon.
Coach John Northey suggested the players should pay the crowd for watching the game. He said: "I saw them as they were coming off the ground and I suggested they reach into their pockets and throw $20 each to the crowd."
