Four quarters of pressure football consigned the Demons to their seventh consecutive loss, but the Tigers really only needed the first to seal the victory. Seven goals to one to open the game and it was all but over. Or so the Tigers thought. By half-time the scores were level and Melbourne had landed a seven goal to two second term.
The Tigers won the game for a second time in the third quarter, and despite having use of the wind in the final term Melbourne were outscored and went on to a loss which left them three games last and all but certain of the wooden spoon.
Best were Dillon, Walker and D. Clark. Colcott (bruised thigh) was replaced by Jones in the last quarter. K. Clarke (bruised thigh) was replaced by Jennings in the last quarter.
