For the second week in a row new full-forward Clarke was again dominant up forward, and yet again the Demons were seemingly in a winning position at half-time before crumbling in the final term.
Carlton hadn't won a match in five weeks, including a draw the previous Saturday, so despite conceding the first two goals it represented Melbourne's best chance in weeks to add their second win for the season. When they led at half time it looked like a chance, but Carlton made a raft of positional changes in the third quarter and it helped them to 6.9 to 2.0, putting the home side in control and they were barely challenged again.
Melbourne withstood early attacks after half time, but once their defence cracked it fell to bits. The Demons had six shots in the final term and missed them all, as Carlton ran away with the win.
Denis Cordner was Melbourne's best, battling single handedly as his teammates fell away as the game went on. Arnold and Clarke were also prominent. Love replaced Spencer (injured knee) in the second half, while McKaige was an unused reserve.
