Having gotten their season ever so slightly back on track with a thrilling win against Carlton the previous Saturday, talk out of the Demon camp during the week was all about how they were still a chance to play finals football. One (then) record 37 minute, 48 second quarter and nine Richmond goals latter any hopes they had were in tatters. Cameron Bruce had nudged Melbourne in front with a goal entering time-on of the first term before the Tiger rampage began.
A dominant Matthew Richardson - matched up against David Neitz - and Brad Ottens helped Richmond to 14 goals to five at half time to seal the deal. Five goals to one for Melbourne in the last quarter gave the margin some respectability but it was too little, too late.
Best were Ward, Leoncelli and Yze.
Shane Woewodin suffered a cut head, Nathan Brown a hip injury and Matthew Whelan a damaged hamstring. Woewodin was well beaten by Joel Bowden and restricted to ten possessions.
