Carrying a terrible record at Victoria Park into the match Melbourne reversed the course of most of the previous 40 years of clashes at the Magpies' home ground. A fitter side, they ran out winners of a fast, entertaining game in the final term after withstanding a blistering third quarter attack from the Pies.

Melbourne took the lead by a goal in the first quarter, and they had been unlucky to score their first one. Smith tried to kick out of a pack, and when he missed the ball he instead knocked it through with his heel. It was ultimately good enough for a seven point lead.

Collingwood had been disappointing in 1940 but put up unexpected resistance which kept them in the match until the last five minutes when the visitors used their stamina advantage to shoot away and win comfortably.

Best were Anderson, Mueller and Emselle. Maher was selected as 19th man.
