Promoted from the Seconds at the start of 1937, Emselle played three games in his first season but was one of the side's best in that year's seconds campaign. In 1938 he played 14, and by the end of 1939 was a premiership player and one of the best in the 1939 Grand Final triumph.
He served in the Army in 1941 but was able to play 20 games for the season. Emselle retired at the end of 1943 after suffering persistent knee trouble.
Represented the VFL Seconds in a game against the VFA Seconds in 1936.
His son Ken played 97 games between 1962 and 1969.
