Melbourne all but confirmed their spot in the top four with a comfortable victory over a North Melbourne side who had just one win for the season to date.

North gave a good account of themselves in the first half, they got the first three goals of the game before Melbourne settled and got their first major through Taylor. Two further late goals cut the quarter time margin to four points.

There was no score for 10 minutes of the second quarter as the sides went from one end to the other without any real chances being created. North got the first goal of the term again, and for the second time it inspired a Melbourne comeback. Warne-Smith kicked one goal from 50 yards, then set up another for Vine that gave his side a six point lead at half time.

For the second week in a row the Redlegs unleashed a third quarter burst which won the game, kicking six goals to one.

Deane, Davidson and Corbett were best. Tymms injured his hip, Esposito his leg, Taylor bruised ribs and Warne-Smith had a bruised thigh.

Melbourne remained fourth, but with an inferior percentage to fifth placed St Kilda.
