With the game played on neutral territory as part of the sectional rounds the unoccupied East Melbourne ground was overlooked in favour of that of South Melbourne, and the crowd is described as having been affected greatly by the decision.
Despite only taking a one point lead into the second quarter Collingwood were the better side early, with superior passing and handball. Melbourne's strength lay in their ruck work.
Melbourne played their best football during the third quarter but could not take advantage to score more than one goal, which was then matched by Collingwood before the Magpies run away to an easy win in the last quarter.
Best were Wardill, McGinis and Moodie.
