Overnight rain left the MCG in a poor state, but after going into quarter time narrowly behind Melbourne ran away to an easy victory.
12 goals to four in the middle two quarters won the game. The sides kicked two goals each in the opening minutes of the second term before Melbourne took off. Three late goals helped the Demons to a 22 point lead at half time.
St Kilda got the first of the third quarter, before Vin Coutie piled on the next four goals in a row. After Melbourne had three behinds to open the last term, St Kilda kicked two to reduce the margin below 40. The home side then came good again, extending the margin to nearly 10 goals.
Best were Coutie, Fitzpatrick and J. Smith.
